Fliptop History

Fliptop is a First Filipino rap battle league or battle rhyming that includes a lot of bragging and boasting content combined with insult against opponents, It is also a modern balagtasan style rap by both Fliptop camp.

Battles are mix of freestyle and written lines. acapella, rappers are allowed to write their lyrics (doesn't make use of a microphone)The old version of fliptop which is in the year 2010 to 2013 are only freestyle battles. Freestyle battles are battles that contain only jokes, bully words, and others but didn’t contain any personals because fliptop was just starting and the emcees has no words yet to express personals.

it involves two rappers throwing invectives at each other within a time limit. coming from the word flip. it means to toss back the insult to the competitor. after 3 rounds the panel of judges selects the winner.

Fliptop was founded by Alaric Riam Yuson (a.k.a. Anygma) on February year 2010. Anygma is one of the battle rapper in US, it Inspired him so he brought the concept to the Philippines.

"it’s not all about big clothes, bitches and bling-bling..."

How did Fliptop start?
It was as simple as applying some format from America to the Philippines. We’ve had battling ever since also in the Philippines, but when Grind Time was shown—the American league, probably the biggest in the world too—and when their format, the concept of it was introduced to the greater public, I picked up on it. I applied it here. "Anygma"

What are the rules and regulations?
if I'm not mistaken the only rule in Fliptop is no physical contact, and threatening  to avoid having a fight, and of course to avoid suspension or banning of the competitor.

Fliptop helps the career of an emcee to gain their popularity, and one of them is Marlon Peroramas or aka Loonie. for Him, it's all about the hip-hop life, the rhyme and rhythm of words. He was been into rap since third grade. He started writing his own lyrics after he heard Alanis Morissette He's Idol, then he  started to drew his own mock up album covers when he was on grade 6.

He was taken under the wing of rapper Francis Magalona and became one of his hype men.

Fliptop rappers don’t do it for money as there’s no monetary reward after the matches. It’s for a tattoo, and shirts
FlipTop gained prominence through video-sharing site YouTube. As of November 2011, all videos uploaded on its official YouTube account "fliptopbattles" gained 107 million views and is the third most viewed and sixth most subscribed channel in the Philippines.
